The Rise of the Luxury Mocktail: No & Low Menus for Events
Why no- and low-ABV cocktails are now essential at luxury events — how to design a zero-proof menu with real craft, and serve sober-curious guests without compromise.
A few years ago, the non-drinker at a luxury event was handed a soft drink and an apology. Today, the zero-proof serve is one of the most requested — and most photographed — items on the menu. The no- and low-ABV cocktail has grown up, and any event that ignores it now feels behind. Here is how we think about a luxury mocktail programme worth the name.
Why no & low is no longer optional
The shift is real and measurable. No-alcohol drink volumes have been growing at pace, and a large share of younger guests now drink little or no alcohol at all. This is not only about abstinence — it is “selective premiumisation”: people drink less, but better, and they expect their alcohol-free choice to be just as considered as everyone else’s cocktail. At a wedding, a brand launch or a corporate dinner, an excellent zero-proof list is now a mark of a well-run room.
A mocktail is not a soft drink
The difference between a luxury mocktail and a glass of lemonade is craft. A great zero-proof serve is built with the same architecture as a cocktail:
- Acidity to give it lift and length.
- Bitterness or tannin to give it grip, so it is not merely sweet.
- Texture and depth from house infusions, cordials, teas and verjus.
- A proper base — distilled non-alcoholic spirits such as Seedlip or Everleaf give structure a juice never can.
Designing the menu
We usually mirror the cocktail list rather than running a separate, lesser one. If there is a signature cocktail, there is a zero-proof version of it, in the same glass and the same colour, so no guest is visibly “the one not drinking”. Beyond that, a long, refreshing serve for lingering and one with a little theatre cover the room.
How many zero-proof serves?
For most events, two to three well-made options is the sweet spot — enough choice to feel generous, few enough to pour quickly. Quality beats quantity here as everywhere; we make that case in the anatomy of a bespoke cocktail menu.
Weddings, corporate and brand events
At weddings, a strong no/low list looks after pregnant guests, designated drivers and those simply taking the night gently. At brand and press events, where many guests are working, it keeps the room sharp. And at corporate events, it signals a host who has thought about everyone in the room.
